It kind of struck me yesterday in the Bowness interview, when he said he told the other coaches after the elimination game that he was done...seemed a lot like the way Maurice went out. Notwithstanding the personal issues he's dealing and dealt with, he basically said he had no answers for how to get better results out of this team, and that was the thing that made walking away (or hanging them up) the obvious thing to do. That could be the case, he seemed certain that he was making the right decision....I would have tried new PP & PK coaches before giving up though  Agreed👍. 2b9😉😃👍 |

Arniel was hired before RB. Clearly TN thinks of him as the anointed one. The special teams weakness started at the begining of the season and did not tangibly improve at the end of the regular season. His inability to change the special teams was a key factor in the Jets inability to win all but one playoff games.
Personally that, in my mind, excludes SA from consideration for the HC job.
Find someone that can get the ear of the players and hold them accountable, it's clearly not Arniel.

His inability to change the special teams was a key factor in the Jets inability to win all but one playoff games. Personally that, in my mind, excludes SA from consideration for the HC job. Yet the same PK coach and most of the same PKers finished with the 7th best kill rate in 22-23, so I am not sure its that simple. Though, as I have been watching more of the good teams play, I noticed that most of them have their elite players on the ice when short-handed. It's likely the lack of defensive acuity by Winnipeg's top forwards that stops the coaching staff from using them. |

For those who have a subscription the Jets coaching job is discussed. There are bunch on names I do recognize and a whole lot I don't. But the time to hire is now. Please no protracted coach search like 2 years ago. If it is to be SA just do it! |

Florida had one of the best regular seasons ever in 21-22. They get swept in the playoffs and mgmt. says sorry coach. Not good enough. Playoffs baby. Playoffs. Maurice's main problem with the Jets was that he hung around too long. If it doesn't click when it counts, move on. Agree, Maurice started out well and had a rather refreshing approach for the first 2 or 3 seasons I thought. Then it was like he became buddy of the core players to the point where those players could specify who they were willing to play with, who should be excluded, etc. and from there he turned into a pretty terrible coach IMO. He's still new to FLA. Well let's face it, he's inherited a much more talented, at least playoff ready team, than he ever had here. And he may have learned a lesson here with the Jets in how to avoid creating cliques.
Regarding Gallant, I always thought he might be a good fit here, although his reputation seems to have lost some polish with how short his coaching tenures have been. Mind you, with pretty good winning percentages. I figure he's the type who's not averse to letting the GM know what he thinks which maybe creates a little friction...I think won't work too well with TN model.
Honestly, I wouldn't mind a p-ohed Keefe on the rebound.
It sure sounds like it's going to be Arniel though in listening to the local scribes, which I would consider a "nice" pick...I like Arniel, I'm just not sure that's the coach we need. He was the PP coach, where was the strategy? There didn't really seem to be any and I don't think that bodes well when as Scheif and Nino say, sometimes adjustments need to be made.
Anyway, the roster needs an overhaul to get more size, grit, skill that is suited for playoff rigours...right now we all know, they just don't have it... so as Tracker says, no coach is going to change that without management's help.

Start integrating some of our young speed guys into the lineup, see what you can trade for, and let the chips fall where they may. Maybe give Salomonsson a real opportunity to make the team. It'll be difficult to trade your way into being a legitimate contender. Might as well start the youth movement. |

I think of overhaul as more than retool but less than rebuild (which would require a substantial tear down). I don't know the exact definition of these terms I suppose but I would think of a retool to be a tweak here and there with the thought that those changes will turn your team that is "oh so close", to put them over the top...kind of like the trade deadline additions are supposed to do.
I think gaps are too deep to fix with simple tweaks - as I believe we agree. I think the Jets need to bring in players (if they could ever find them) who will change the character of the team. But I think there's a good part of the lineup that we can build on...well Scheif and Helle are just starting their new contracts this coming year!

The more the status quo the less will be fan interest. But TN wants a playoff series. Just one brings millions in revenue. This is what Cheveldayoff was asked to do. He delivered. So now just keep tweaking! That's the mentality. It doesnt matter that history has now taught them that status quo is a potentially and maybe fatally a fan enthusiasm wrecker. It was only towards the end of the season that fan enthusiasm returned and of course the whiteout a marginally effective (largely ineffective) tool to gin up the masses. And there was Cheveldayoff when these moves were made all visible for the media where he usually is hidden away from prying eyes.There he was answering in glowing fashion with his less than usual obfuscations.
But alas the ship sank again! Just like last year. But they did only allow 199 goals this year! Only to be emasculated by goals in the playoffs. Lol.
The core for this team is: Morrissey, Scheifele, Hellebuyck, Connor, Ehlers. None of that is the stuff of playoff runs. The other pieces added while good players of varying degrees can give a modicum of success in the regular season. Some may not want to stay here. We'll see.
This is our lot. Cheveldayoff will continue tweaking and TN will continue the paradigm.
