It's the players union that won't end it. They'd want something in return to end it. If they are too stupid to protect their own players screw em.

With all the knowledge these days about complications caused by tobacco use this should be a no brainer. Get the players on meth, no harmful side effects there.

No kidding but the union doesn't see stuff that way. They view EVERYTHING as one big bargaining session.

IMO they need to take a verry verrry strong stance against it and essentially put it squarely on the union. Stop or dont play. Make them be the bad guys walking out for tobacco

Why would the owners wreck their business for something that don't hurt them. Guys want to kill themselves let them.

Why would the owners wreck their business for something that don't hurt them. Guys want to kill themselves let them. because its important and its time for the owners and basebal to stand up to the players..instead of letting them ruin the game one dead player and false record at a time.

^^^ Business is too good to do that. No one is putting a gun to players heads forcing them to chew. In a perfect world sure MLB should ban it but it's not worth picking a fight/risking a crushing labor war over.

There are a ton of issues that need to be hashed out because the players run the asylum i dont think this would even stop work in the MLB to be honest. The players would get CRUSHED in the media if they tried to walk off for tobacco. and if they did now they risk being locked out a year because the owners will say fine you dont want to do us this favor on tobacco we want a damn salary cap and you arent working till you come back. The union isnt that dumb to risk a large strike over tobacco i think they will give an inch so the owners dont take a mile. You are right labor fights arent good but the threat of them are. if the players risk striking over NOTHING then they risk a very large labor fight..one they wont win if the owners actually have the courage to fight unlike COWARD uncle bud who has been fine with the union doing whatever the hell they want for years.

Threats lead to bad relationships which lead to distrust/bruised egos which lead to actual work stoppages. Only ones that want to go back the dark ages of the early 90's is
1. Major league soccer backers 2. A losing sports owner who though losing college coach Tim Floyd was > Phil Jackson, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman
Group 1 doesn't have MLB's best interest at hear, number 2 is just plain crazy/demented.
It's not broke so there is no need to fix it. Only thing worth pushing for/fighting for is the pitch clock. This is the biggest threat to the game long term. It's sad players die but IT'S THEIR CHOICE!!!! They know the risks. Besides what if they want to dip at home?
Owners aren't risking going back to the dark days early 90's where ST. Louis, Cubs Boston averaged under 30,000 a game. After a work stoppage this time they don't have Cal Ripken, steroid men and the newness of retro parks to bail them out.

its not about their choice. Its about displaying tobacco use across tv screens across america. NO they need to ban it now and fight if they need to fight for it. This is too important im sorry your precious MLB has problems that need to be hased out but they do and this is one of them. Its this or push Cities that own the parks to BAn tobacco usage in the parks INCLUDING the players on the field and fine players through city ordinances.

Chew should probably not be allowed but it's use is so subtle that it's hardly noticeable unless you are really looking for it. Having a witch hunt for anyone using it will only cause more attention to it making it more exposed than usual and probably do more damage than good. Not only that but I doubt the umps want to play babysitter on it. Educating youth in baseball programs about the dangers of its use might be a better approach because it's use is ingrained so heavily in baseball not just in the majors.

The way you talk it makes me think that you only think this issue is a MLB issue when in fact the time any player reaches the MLB they have already been chewing for years. The reason why smoking is banned in public places is because of the dangers of second hand smoke. With chew there is no danger of that. Sure you could argue that it could make a mess but so does sunflower seeds, gum and peanuts. Banning it would just be a knee jerk reaction that is totally unnecessary and would be in the same lines as banning alcohol at games. To stamp this problem out they need to focus on the years these kids start to chew and show them the many dangers of chewing.

Why are these kids chewing though? they watch David Ortiz and all the big stars with a big wad in their mouth spit over home plate.
It should be banned. Absolutely banned it sends a terrible message with these guys Blatantly spitting everywhere.

Absolutely banned it sends a terrible message with these guys Blatantly spitting everywhere. It's deeper than that. It's in the culture. I have friends that don't watch baseball but they play it and they chew. A simple mlb ban won't do it and players will still do it. You think Ortiz gives a sh@t about a thousand dollar fine?
